Walking along the Grand Canal, many of the surfaces that look like polished marble aren't: they're marmorino, a lime-based finishing plaster that imitates the appearance of polished stone with a radically more accessible budget and logistics. It isn't a fake in the negative sense of the word — it's a finishing technology as sophisticated as stone carving, with its own chemistry and craftsmanship that deserve to be understood for their technical value, not just for the illusionistic effect they produce.
The raw material: mature putty, not just any lime
Marmorino isn't made with industrially produced hydrated lime powder, which is nonetheless the base of most ordinary civil plasters. It requires lime putty — quicklime slaked by immersion in an excess of water, left to mature in a pit for a minimum of six months, ideally a year or more. Extended maturation has a precise chemical-physical effect: it progressively reduces particles of incompletely hydrated calcium oxide that, if present, would cause small pops and craters on the surface once the plaster is applied (a phenomenon plasterers call "popping"), while at the same time refining the paste's plasticity, giving it the ability to take smooth, mirror-like finishes that a less mature, less plastic hydrated lime powder can't replicate at the same quality.
To this mature putty is added finely ground marble powder — essentially calcium carbonate in aggregate form, chemically akin to the binder itself — in proportions that vary according to the desired grain and the workshop's tradition. It's this marble powder, not a pigment or a foreign additive, that gives marmorino its characteristic translucence and the tactile feel of stone, even though it remains an entirely different material in substance from carved marble.
Application: two ultra-thin coats
The technique calls for applying two thin coats, each about 2–3 mm thick — never a single, thicker layer, which would compromise the uniformity of carbonation and the fineness of the final finish. Each coat must be applied with a metal trowel in crossing passes, to distribute the paste evenly and prevent visible joints from forming between worked areas — an execution detail that requires coordination among several craftsmen on large surfaces, to keep the edge of one worked area from drying before the adjacent area is finished.
Hot-iron polishing: the step that makes the difference
The step that sets marmorino apart from a simple fine lime plaster is hot-iron polishing, carried out while the last coat is still fresh and plastic. A heated iron is passed over the surface under controlled pressure: the combined heat and pressure mechanically close the remaining pores and bring a thin, semi-translucent layer of calcite (calcium carbonate) to the surface, which gives the finish its characteristic opalescent sheen. The result isn't waterproof — and it shouldn't be: a well-executed marmorino stays permeable to water vapor, even though its resistance to capillary penetration by liquid water is much lower than that of an unpolished raw lime plaster. It's the same compatibility principle that governs the restoration of historic masonry: a refined aesthetic finish must not compromise the breathability of the underlying plaster-masonry system.
Marmorino, Venetian stucco, Roman stucco: telling them apart
The family of fine lime finishes is broader than marmorino alone, and the three variants are easily confused in today's commercial language. Marmorino is the flat, hot-iron-polished version, meant to imitate a polished slab of marble. Venetian stucco (or Venetian polished plaster) is technically a marmorino to which a hot beeswax or carnauba wax finish is applied: the wax further fills the remaining microporosity and intensifies the mirror-like reflection, one extra step beyond plain marmorino. Roman stucco, finally, is conceptually different: richer in aggregate, less plasticized, worked into three-dimensional forms — cornices, moldings, friezes — using metal profiles dragged across the still-fresh material, to imitate not a polished slab but a carved relief. All three share the same technical premise: they require lime putty matured for at least a year, and craftsmanship passed down through direct apprenticeship, not written instructions.
