In 1291, the Republic of Venice orders every glassworks in the city to relocate to the island of Murano. The reason isn't artistic but practical: furnaces burn day and night at extremely high temperatures, and the fire risk in a city of wooden houses and narrow canals is too high. It's a measure of urban safety, not a choice of prestige — but its consequences are enormous. Concentrated on an island, watched and partly isolated from the rest of the Republic, Murano's master glassmakers develop over the following centuries a body of technical knowledge that becomes the absolute reference point in Europe, protected with almost military rigour: masters were forbidden from leaving the Serenissima carrying the secrets of their craft, on pain of severe punishment. Murano glass, in other words, is born from a public-safety constraint that turned into a technical monopoly.

The blowpipe, the furnace, the hands: what "blown" means

The blowpipe technique involves gathering a mass of molten glass on the end of a long hollow tube, straight from the furnace crucible at around 1,000–1,100°C, and shaping it by blowing air through the tube while the master rotates it, reheats it, works it with hand tools — tongs, wet-wood paddles, shears. It's a process that takes years of apprenticeship to master and never produces two identical pieces: every object carries the minimal, but perceptible, variation of the gesture that made it. Alongside this base technique sit specific traditions of Murano craftsmanship: filigrana (thin threads of opaque, often white, glass embedded in the transparent mass in regular patterns), millefiori (sections of multicoloured canes assembled to form floral patterns within the mass), murrina (the same principle applied to larger sheets), and incalmo (the hot joining of two bubbles of differently coloured glass into a single piece, an operation requiring perfect synchrony between two masters). A fundamental technical leap comes in the 15th century with Angelo Barovier, who perfects cristallo — a glass almost colourless and clear as rock crystal, obtained by purifying the mix of the impurities that tinted it green — an innovation that makes Murano the undisputed leader in mirror and fine-glass production for two centuries.

When an architect becomes a glassmaster: Carlo Scarpa and Venini

The most direct meeting point between this craft tradition and the discipline of architecture has a precise name: Carlo Scarpa, who works as art director first for the M.V.M. Cappellin glassworks and then, from 1932 to 1947, for Venini — the furnace founded in 1921 by Paolo Venini together with Giacomo Cappellin, among the first to bring a modern language into Murano production. This collaboration produces techniques that are now landmarks of Italian art glass — vetro sommerso (layers of different colours "submerged" one within another), vetro battuto (a surface hammered to selectively opacify the transparency), vetro corroso (acid-treated for a matte, rough texture) — developed by an architect who thought about glass with the same attention to light, layering and construction detail that he would later bring into his architectural projects, from the Fondazione Querini Stampalia to the Castelvecchio Museum, where custom glass elements, often made in Murano, are as integral to the compositional language as stone or exposed concrete.

The dialogue — and the contrast — with industrial float glass

Float glass, as the main guide in this section explains, is an industrial product born to be perfectly flat, uniform, reproducible on a scale of millions of square metres a year. Murano blown glass is the exact opposite on every parameter: small sizes compatible with a hand-blown bubble, one-off rather than serial production, a per-piece cost that can be orders of magnitude higher, irregularity as a perceived value rather than a defect to eliminate. For this reason, Murano art glass never competes with float glass on the ground of the large continuous facade — there's no such thing as a blown-glass curtain wall — but occupies a complementary and often refined space: custom chandeliers and lighting fixtures for prestigious lobbies, museums and hotels; art installations integrated into architectural projects, as in the "Le Stanze del Vetro" exhibitions (since 2012 on the island of San Giorgio Maggiore in Venice, promoted by the Fondazione Giorgio Cini together with the Pentagram Stiftung, dedicated precisely to 20th-century art glass); philological restoration of historic mosaics and stained glass, where only Murano craft technique faithfully reproduces the original tesserae; custom glazing and screens in high-end retail and exhibition-design projects, where the uniqueness of the blown piece is part of the brand's story.

International cross-pollination deserves a chapter of its own: American artist Dale Chihuly, today among the world's best known for his monumental-scale blown-glass installations, trained in the Murano furnaces themselves in 1968 as the first American apprentice admitted to work in a Venetian factory — an experience he then took back to the United States, fusing Murano technique with a compositional ambition of a completely different scale, from huge chandeliers suspended in hotel and museum lobbies to permanent environmental installations in public buildings.
