The mosque is a building type invented from scratch in the 7th century. It imitates neither the Greek temple, nor the Christian basilica, nor the Jewish temple — it starts from zero, developing its own solutions. There is one fundamental requirement: the building must be oriented toward Mecca. Everything else — form, materials, dimensions, decoration — varies according to local tradition, available resources, and the patron's power.
Geometry as language
Islam forbids the figurative representation of living beings in religious spaces — no Christ on the cross, no saints, no Virgin. This does not impoverish Islamic architectural decoration: it enriches it with an alternative language. Geometry. The surfaces of medieval Islamic buildings are covered with geometric patterns of extraordinary complexity — interlacing stars, regular polygons, tessellations that anticipate modern mathematical fractals. The Islamic artist explores the possibilities of plane geometry with the same inventiveness with which the Christian painter explores the human figure.
The muqarnas — the three-dimensional honeycomb vault formed by dozens of small cells of stone or stucco — is the most striking product of this geometry applied to architecture. A muqarnas has no structural function: it is pure decoration, built against the load-bearing structure. But its geometric complexity requires sophisticated mathematical knowledge to design. Medieval Islamic master builders used geometric projection tools equivalent to modern ones — without formal mathematics, but with empirical practice.
The Alhambra: paradise in stone
The Alhambra of Granada (14th century) is the most sophisticated palace complex of medieval Islamic architecture in the West. It is not a mosque — it is a palace, with apartments, throne rooms, baths, gardens, fountains. The name means "the red one" (from the red clay of the outer walls), but the interiors are white, decorated with muqarnas and geometric stucco patterns, alternating with Quranic and poetic inscriptions on the walls.
Il giardino dell'Alhambra — il Patio de los Leones, il Patio de los Arrayanes — è un'interpretazione architettonica del paradiso islamico. Influence on European architecture
But let us return to Europe. Islamic architecture influenced medieval Christian architecture more than is generally acknowledged — especially in Sicily and Spain, where the two cultures intermingled for centuries. The Cappella Palatina in Palermo (1132–1140), commissioned by the Normans, has ceilings of Islamic muqarnas, Byzantine-style mosaics, and a Christian basilican plan. It is a building impossible to classify — and also one of the most beautiful in southern Italy. The Gothic pointed arch — the structural invention that defines the Gothic style — probably derives from the Islamic horseshoe arch, which entered Europe through contacts in Sicily and Spain.
