The medieval European bridge is never just a crossing. It is a piece of city over water — with shops, houses, chapels, gatehouses. Medieval London Bridge (rebuilt in stone in 1209) had 200 houses and shops across 19 arches, housed 3,000 people, had a chapel dedicated to Saint Thomas Becket at its midpoint, and the heads of traitors displayed on spikes atop the gatehouses. It was the longest structure in England — 283 metres — and also one of the most densely inhabited districts of London. It was demolished in 1831.

The problem is simple: a river is a border. The bridge crossing it is a checkpoint — military, fiscal, commercial. Whoever controls the bridge controls the traffic. Tolls are collected at the gatehouses. The shops pay rent to the bridge's owner — who thereby finances the structure's upkeep. The medieval bridge is self-financing infrastructure: the shops pay for the bridge. The model works for centuries.

Construction technique

The medieval stone bridge uses the arch as its basic structural unit — like all medieval architecture. The round arch (semicircular) is the Roman type, simpler to build. The pointed arch (ogival) is lighter and allows wider spans with slenderer piers — it is adopted progressively over the 12th–13th centuries, in parallel with the Gothic arch of cathedrals. Florence's Ponte Vecchio uses segmental pointed arches — a geometry that is not semicircular but nearly flat, allowing an arch span wider than its rise.

Construction required the temporary diversion of the river, or building on piles during low-water periods. Piling was the first act — the temporary timber structure that served as falsework for building the piers. Once the arch was completed — with the "keystone" inserted at its centre — the arch becomes self-supporting and the wooden centring can be removed. This is the most critical moment of construction: if the calculations are wrong, the arch collapses.

The Rialto Bridge: commerce and engineering

The Rialto Bridge in Venice — rebuilt in stone in 1591 by Antonio da Ponte, after centuries of timber structures — is the most studied case of a medieval-Renaissance European bridge. The problem was exceptional: a single arch span of 28 metres over a navigable canal (the Grand Canal), with no possibility of using intermediate piers that would have blocked water traffic. Antonio da Ponte's solution — preferred over those proposed by Palladio, Michelangelo and Sansovino, all rejected — is a segmental arch of 28 metres, founded on 6,000 wooden piles driven into the mud on each side. The piles are alder wood — a species that does not rot in water but petrifies. After 430 years, the piles still hold.

The Rialto Bridge does not have only a central roadway: it has three lanes — the central one for pedestrians, the two side ones for shops. 24 shops in two rows, facing the canal. The model of Florence's Ponte Vecchio replicated in the lagoon, with the navigable canal in place of the Arno. Here too the economic model works: the shops finance the bridge, which is built at Venice's point of maximum commercial traffic — the Rialto market. Medieval architecture does not separate function, economy and form: it holds them together because they support one another.

The Vasari Corridor

In 1565, Cosimo I de' Medici commissioned Giorgio Vasari to build an elevated corridor connecting Palazzo Vecchio to Palazzo Pitti across the Ponte Vecchio. The Vasari Corridor runs above the bridge's shops — which the Medici had converted from butchers to goldsmiths (quieter, less foul-smelling, more suited to the Grand Duke's passage). The corridor is 1 km long, has a single window overlooking the Arno, and has recently been restored and reopened. The Ponte Vecchio also has two triangular cutwaters around the central pier that break the current and protect the pier from erosion — the same system used in Roman bridges. The Renaissance does not reinvent bridge engineering: it inherits it from Rome.

The end of inhabited bridges

Inhabited bridges disappear progressively over the 17th–18th centuries for sanitary and practical reasons. The shops obstruct the view of the river, the houses make the bridge vulnerable to fire, growing traffic makes the roadway's width insufficient. Florence's Ponte Vecchio is one of the few survivors — protected by its touristic beauty. The others were demolished and replaced by bare, functional bridges, with no life above. The modern era has separated infrastructure from urban life. The bridge has become a corridor, not a piece of city.
