What's the difference between the Doric, Ionic and Corinthian orders?

They're three proportional systems, not just three decorative styles. The Doric, the oldest, has no base under the columns and an essential capital — echinus and abacus — with no ornament: stocky proportions, an effect of solidity. The Ionic has a base, a slimmer shaft (height-to-diameter ratio around 1:8-1:9 versus the Doric's 1:6) and a capital with spiral volutes. The Corinthian, the latest and most ornate, has an acanthus-leaf capital. Fluting, capital, entablature: every part has a structural function before a decorative one.

How did the Romans build the Pantheon's dome without steel reinforcement?

By progressively lightening the concrete (opus caementicium) from the base upward, varying the density of the aggregate, and hollowing out the interior surface with coffers, which remove even more weight. The result — a 43.44-metre diameter — remains the largest unreinforced concrete dome from the ancient world: wider than St. Peter's (41.47 m), built fourteen centuries later.

How many spectators fit inside the Colosseum?

Between 50,000 and 80,000, depending on the estimate. The building measures 188×156 metres on an oval plan, stands 50 metres tall across four levels, and has 80 ground-floor entrance arches: a routing system designed to move a huge crowd in and out without bottlenecks.

What is a peripteral Greek temple, and how do you "read" it?

A temple surrounded on all sides by a colonnade. Unlike a church, it wasn't meant to be entered by worshippers: the god's statue stood inside the cella, worshippers stayed outside, and the building was experienced by walking around it, not by going in.
